殿試在即，應天書院卻傳聞書生被“閻羅索命”，包拯在收到恩師的奇怪信件后，動身前往書院一探究竟。然而，這座書院并沒有看上去的那么簡單，院長不知所蹤，書生接連身亡，整個書院籠罩在詭異的氣氛之下，包拯為尋回恩師，阻止閻羅的殺人行動，決心將此事調查清楚。隨著真相的逼近，線索逐漸交織在一起，而包拯發現朝堂之上還隱藏著更大的陰謀……
