　　在為公司勤勤懇懇工作了十五年之后，亨利（讓-皮埃爾·利奧德 Jean-Pierre Léaud 飾）卻落得了一個被解雇的悲慘下場。心中充滿憤懣的他在生活里也四處碰壁，絕望之中，他想到了自殺。可是，無論他使用什么法子，都無法成功赴死，就在這時，他在報紙上看到了一間聚集著黑道分子和殺手的小酒館，他決定去那里試一試。　　亨利雇傭了一名殺手（肯尼斯·考利 Kenneth Colley 飾），讓他來取自己的性命，然而，在此之后，亨利意外的邂逅了名叫瑪格麗特（Margi Clarke 飾）的美麗賣花女孩，兩人迅速擦出愛情的火花。生命有了繼續下去的意義，亨利不想死了，然而，他卻怎么也找不到當初和他簽訂了合約的殺手，這也就意味著，從此刻開始，他隨時都有可能遭到殺手的暗殺。
