故事發生在20世紀50年代的英格蘭，莉迪亞（荷麗黛 middot;格蘭杰 Holliday Grainger 飾）是生活在那里的一位非常平凡的主婦，在遭到丈夫的無情拋棄后，莉迪亞無奈之下和兒子查理開始了相依為命的拮據生活。因為家庭的原因，查理在學校里飽受欺凌，母子兩人生活屢屢走入絕境。正當兩人最絕望的時候，一位名為簡（安娜 帕奎因 Anna Paquin 飾）的女醫生搬到了莉迪亞家隔壁。簡溫柔而又善良，她不僅治好了查理的傷，還在莉迪亞和查理險些遭遇流落街頭的命運的時候向兩人敞開了家里的大門。就這樣，莉迪亞住進了簡的家，隨著時間的推移，兩人之間產生了別樣的感情，與此同時，有關兩人的流言蜚語在小小的村莊里瘋狂的傳播著。
