Catholicism entered Korea in 1784. Lee Seung-hun spreads the words with the brothers of Jung Yak-jong and Jung Yak-yong. The religion is used as an impetus for dispute between political parties so it becomes persecuted. During the Sin-yu Persecution, Ha-sang and Jung-eun avoid torture and surveillance and gather the parishioners, expanding the church's power. Lee Hang-ju, the illegitimate child of Lee Ji-yeon a high ranking official, rescues Jung-eun from danger and is drawn to her at first glance. Hang-ju and Jung-eun's fathers give their blessing to their marriage but one is executed for truth and the other becomes a high ranking official whom no one can approach. Jung-eun avoids Hang-ju's love for the truth and the teachings of the church. Hang-ju desperately chases after his love. When many parishioners disappear like dew on the gallows during the Roman Catholic persecution, Hang-ju receives the Holy Spirit.

　　某紡織廠的音樂部教師東植對錦川發生的一起殺人事件表示出極大的興趣。　　某天，東植從女工郭善英處收到一封情書，并向舍監告發，善英被工廠開除。曾鼓勵善英寫信的朋友趙慶熙借著鋼琴輔導的契機開始出入東植家。為了貼補家計，東植妻子做了很多裁縫活兒，身體越來越虛弱。東植委托慶熙尋找到一名合適的下女，幫助持家。妻子懷孕回娘家的當下，慶熙借機向東植表達了愛意，卻受到辱蔑被攆了出去。這一切都被窗外的下女看到眼里。下女借機誘惑東植，并與之發生了肉體關系。三個月后，下女懷孕。東植的妻子知道真相后，將下女推下樓梯，導致流產。失去孩子的下女怒火中燒，性情開始變得暴烈。結果，下女將東植夫婦倆的孩子也推下樓梯，藏了起來。下女以向工廠曝光所有事實相要挾。為了保住整個家庭，東植將二層的房間讓給下女。最后，準備和下女一起吃耗子藥自殺的東植看到死在臺階上的下女，毅然拋棄了她，重新回到了妻子身邊。這時，電影畫面再次回到東植夫婦看著有關那起殺人新聞的畫面，東植不禁說道：這樣的事情有可能發生在任何一個人的身上。
