　　歌舞伎家庭出身的吉野美智代（谷ナオミ 飾）自由生活在傳統、古樸的環境氛圍之中，她早年分外迷戀《京鹿子娘道成寺》的主角尾形珠三郎（花柳幻舟 飾）。后來她成為江戶千代之人形師的續弦，婚后僅僅半年，丈夫便一命歸西。美智代自此守身如玉，獨自撫養繼女宇子（北川たか子 飾），并且繼承了丈夫人形制作的手藝。十多年過去，宇子已經出落成漂亮的大姑娘，她和繼母親密無間，沒有任何隔閡。 　　一個意外影響了母女倆的感情。某批發商曾凌辱美智子，當他再次欲行輕薄時偏巧被宇子撞見。宇子誤以為母親將行改嫁，生氣地跑出屋子，結果被一位俊朗青年撞傷。這個名叫秀夫（中丸信 飾）的青年正是珠三郎的兒子。美智代沉寂多年的愛火被秀夫重新點燃，她為此在身上刺下《娘道成寺》的圖案……
