Ruby is a young part-time stripper who wallows in drugs, sex and other excesses in meaningless existence. After meeting with local drug dealer O-Rock in her apartment, she seduces him, takes his drug stash, and splits. In a snowy park, Ruby meets Opala, another young woman who takes her back to her large and posh country house where both women indulge in more drugs and sex with one another. When Opala leaves for work, and to score more drugs, Ruby, left alone, becomes more crazy and desperate and falls deeper into her addiction by contacting a stripper co-worker to score more dope. Meanwhile, the drug dealer O-Rock, finding that Ruby has stolen his secret stash of dope, arms himself with a knife and some deadly narcotics, and goes out seeking payback... with interest.

　　兩名高等法院的法官遭殺手謀殺，法學(xué)院高材生達(dá)比（朱莉婭?羅伯茨 Julia Roberts 飾）隨后開始調(diào)查此案，起草一份該案的報告，名為《塘鵝報告》。達(dá)比找到了記者格蘭（丹澤爾?華盛頓 Denzel Washington 飾），因為他是最后一名見到其中一名法官的人，希望能得到他的幫助調(diào)查此案。一天格蘭接到了一個神秘人來電，此人自稱知道誰是該案兇手，格蘭跟蹤到了此人，可惜未能攔下他。　　此時，總統(tǒng)暗中命令相關(guān)人士不要插手此案。格蘭由此起疑，隨后調(diào)查到了總統(tǒng)和馬氏集團關(guān)系密切，而且一切證據(jù)都表明，馬氏與兩位法官的死有著千絲萬縷的關(guān)系！
