金振奎,朱曾女,李恩心,嚴(yán)鶯蘭某紡織廠的音樂部教師東植對錦川發(fā)生的一起殺人事件表示出極大的興趣。 某天，東植從女工郭善英處收到一封情書，并向舍監(jiān)告發(fā)，善英被工廠開除。曾鼓勵善英寫信的朋友趙慶熙借著鋼琴輔導(dǎo)的契機開始出入東植家。為了貼補家計，東植妻子做了很多裁縫活兒，身體越來越虛弱。東植委托慶熙尋找到一名合適的下女，幫助持家。妻子懷孕回娘家的當(dāng)下，慶熙借機向東植表達了愛意，卻受到辱蔑被攆了出去。這一切都被窗外的下女看到眼里。下女借機誘惑東植，并與之發(fā)生了肉體關(guān)系。三個月后，下女懷孕。東植的妻子知道真相后，將下女推下樓梯，導(dǎo)致流產(chǎn)。失去孩子的下女怒火中燒，性情開始變得暴烈。結(jié)果，下女將東植夫婦倆的孩子也推下樓梯，藏了起來。下女以向工廠曝光所有事實相要挾。為了保住整個家庭，東植將二層的房間讓給下女。最后，準(zhǔn)備和下女一起吃耗子藥自殺的東植看到死在臺階上的下女，毅然拋棄了她，重新回到了妻子身邊。這時，電影畫面再次回到東植夫婦看著有關(guān)那起殺人新聞的畫面，東植不禁說道：這樣的事情有可能發(fā)生在任何一個人的身上。
